We have a very busy year in store for us! This year, our grade three's are entering their final primary year. I am looking forward to working with you throughout the year to help your child experience the joys of learning.
Feel free to contact me anytime by phone or email. I am also available in the mornings between 7:45-8:15am.
Student Planners Student planners are used as a home - school communication tool. During the last period of each day, the students will record their homework and reminders into their planners. It is important that they record the assignment and page number. Any incomplete assignments will also be noted in their planner. We will be checking our planners on a daily basis. As well, I encourage you to check and sign planners.
Weekly Learning Updates: Each week, the students will reflect on their learning through their weekly summary and upload something they are proud of onto their FreshGrade portfolio. Parents will be able to log into their student's profile and comment on their child's work! The students LOVE to read the comments from their parents!
Homework Our homework policy is as follows: It is expected that all work is completed and handed in on time. I will always make sure that we have plenty of time in class to work on any assignments. The students' homework will mostly consist of their at home reading, spelling or any finish up on our fun projects that we will work on throughout the year. Any incomplete assignments will be noted in the student's planner. They will then be given time to complete their work during "Homework Club". If the students need help with an assignment, they are welcome to come in from 8:00am-8:30am in the morning to finish up. If they have missed an assignment they can also check their homework on our class website.
Spelling We will be working on spelling everyday with a new program by Mary Tarasoff called "Spelling Strategies You Can Teach". Every Monday, students will learn a new spelling rule such as: "short a sound"-( pat, pay). Students will work together to find words within the pattern from their GOOD FIT BOOKS. We will brainstorm a list together and choose 10-15 words that students will be responsible for practicing. On Tuesdays, we will create a word search and practice our words. Lists of the weeks words will be sent home on Monday in their planners and practiced throughout the week.
Reading Logs: Another goal in our Language Arts program is to help the students develop their independent reading. The students are expected to read a minimum of 4 days a week for 15-20 minutes each time. The students have a Reading Log to where they can record their independent reading. We are asking that you sign the log after each reading so they can feel proud of all of their awesome reading and share in this journey with you. Reading Logs will be collected and marked every month.
Library: Students have an opportunity to exchange their books in our library once a week. They are also welcome and encouraged to sign out any of our classroom library books. Our library book exchange happens on MONDAY mornings. So, when you are packing up your backpack on Sunday to be ready for the week, make sure to pack your library books!
Tests: Throughout the year, we will be working on helping the students develop their study skills. Test dates will be recorded in their planners one week in advance. The students will be given a study guide to help them review the concepts. Once the test has been returned to the students, they will take it home to be signed and reviewed by you. This will help keep parents informed on their child's progress.
Absences: When a student is absent, we will have their work gathered in a "We Missed Ya! folder. This includes the missed assignments and due dates. I will then go over any of the missed assignments with the students. You can also check the website for assignment due dates.
Physical Education This year, our class is following the ministry guidelines that encourage "Daily Physical Activity". We will have physical activity for 30 minutes every day. The activities help develop flexibility, endurance and core strength. We have our weekly P.E. periods. Students are expected to have a proper footwear in order to participate fully in P.E. activities.
